Paintings at Roots Coffeehouse!

Tuesday, August 3rd, 2010

I’ve very excited to announce that beginning this Thursday, August 5, many of my anatomical paintings will be showcased and for sale at Roots Coffeehouse in North Richland Hills, TX (near Fort Worth).

Roots impresses me so far by their business model and atmosphere ( I confess I have yet to try any of their snacks or beverages).  I also confess that I myself will be missing their debut as I’ll be out-of-town until later this month.  But rest assured, no company with this kind of description “Roots Coffeehouse is one of DFW’s first coffeeshops serving all fair trade, organic coffee.”, can keep me away for long, and I can’t wait to see what other great art will be up on their walls!

All of their selected next works will be up from August 5 – October 5th.  Come out and see!

Graduation!

Monday, May 10th, 2010

Last Friday I got a large piece of paper with both my name an lots of Latin on it — the Master of Science in Medical Illustration is official!  The plan now is to move to the Dallas/Denton area of Texas.  To that end I’m continuing the job search in earnest.

So what have I done on my first official day of unemployment? Went back to the studio, of course, and played around with modeling and rendering in Cinema 4D.  Your guess is as good as mine as to what these little spiky balls are:

Reverse Image Search Engines

Sunday, April 11th, 2010

Below is a list of reverse image search engines — not just typing in a term, and coming up with results, but linking or uploading an image and finding similar (or other instances) of the same images online.  The value of these tools for visual artists lay in finding similar reference images quickly, (either for subject matter or palette choice), as well as checking out if your work is being used online un-beknownst to you.  Here’s what I’ve found:

TinEye works to find the exact image, and seems to be the best out there for doing so.

Idee has 3 searching options on their landing page: color based, combination (image recognition + text tags), or straight-up image matching from an upload/URL.  The last option wasn’t working well for me, but other examples online gave pretty good results.

GazoPa trumps Idee in composition/subject matter results, returning images in percentage of how much it matches the original

RevIMG has a clumsy design and doesn’t return a lot of hits at once

Google Image — once, through searching, you find an image that you’d like to find more of, you can click on the “Find similar images” link below the target hit.  It doesn’t do a bad job, but again, you have to first search for the right image, not upload or link to an exact one.  This would be nice for browsing.

SnapTell, very adeptly named, this one is for mobile devices, and the idea is that you Snap a picture, and your device Tells you what it is/where to buy it online.

Did I miss any?

Inner Ear Pendant available

Monday, April 5th, 2010

The inner ear pendant – an anatomically correct stainless steel model – is now available on Etsy! After doing more digging regarding the size, I realized the second round of printing I’d done was too big, and now I can confidently say that this final version is actual size. The earrings I printed smaller, simply for aesthetic reasons and weight consideration on the ear lobe.
The (right) inner ear pendant comes with an 18″ small cable chain.

New site!

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

Welcome to the new blog! I’ve officially moved from the aged microMACROart site.
Here I’ll continue to post works in progress, new techniques, articles of interest, etc in the field of medical illustration / biomedical visuals / medical media. Have a look around!
